This is—beyond a shadow of a doubt—the best scanner on the market and the one you should buy.

Launched in June of 2018, it's the newest and...I'd say shiniest...but it's flat black (not even matte, which is the only disappointing aspect of this scanner).

The SDS100 is fast, easy to use, has a color interface, and simulcast monitoring capabilities that blow all the other digital phase 2 scanners out of the water. That reminds me: it's waterproof(!) Uniden has set a new standard with the SDS100.

FAQ

What’s the difference between the SDS100 and the BCD436HP?
Go to 'Specifics & Compare' tab to see all technical differences. The main differences are:

› The SDS100 can pick up simulcast.
› Faster; the SDS100 is suppose to be 25%-50% faster than the BCD436HP.
› Clearer screen resolution.
› SDS100 is 'water proof'.
› SDS100 is more sensitive and superior at picking up weak signal and 'RF environments'.
› The SDS100 can charge and run at the same time; the BCD436HP must be powered down to charge.
› You can customize the color screen to show what you’d like.
› BCD436HP came out in 2013; SDS100 in June 2018. Like all new technology there have been several minor upgrades.

What’s the difference between the SDS100 and the Whistler TRX-1?
Go to 'Specifics & Compare' tab to see all technical differences. The main differences are:

› The SDS100 can pick up simulcast distortion.
› TRX-1 came out in 2016; SDS100 in June 2018. Like all new technology there have been several minor upgrades.

I need a digital phase 2 scanner, why should I buy the SDS100?
The SDS100 is the newest scanner on the market and the new flagship scanner from the largest police scanner manufacturer in the world; Uniden. The simulcast capabilities are one of a kind and you can buy add ons for NXDN, DMR and ProVoice. So basically, this scanner can pick up everything possible no matter where you live.

Will the SDS100 go on sale anytime soon?
We don't know. Uniden does not disclose when they will be dropping prices and even when prices do drop, it’s only $5 -$10. You can sign up for our emails & we'll keep you posted.

What are ProVoice, EDACS and NXDN and do I need them?
These 3 are forms of digital phase 2 that affect some parts of the U.S.. If your area uses these - you must add them (buy above) to hear those broadcasts. Not sure if your area uses these formats? No biggie (this is confusing) chat with a scanner expert now and we’ll look up your area.

Additional memory?

You can add a larger memory (SD card) to increase favorites lists and recording space. Recording time by SD card size:

› 2 GB = 6 hours
› 4 GB = 12 hours
› 8 GB = 24 hours
› 16 GB = 50 hours
› 32 GB = 100 hours
› 64 GB = 200 hours

What is simulcast distortion?

Check out our simulcast distortion article to learn more.

Software Upgrade Fees

The rate we charge includes the software license(s) and our time to install upgrade. You can upgrade on your own directly from Uniden after you receive your scanner but we will not provide support if you do not purchase from us.

Does this come with the larger battery?

Yes.

Buyers Say

Already have your SDS100? Leave a review on this page to help others.

› Simulcast distortion monitoring works as advertised.
› 25%-50% faster than the BCD436HP & TRX-1.
› SD card placement is better than BCD436HP so card is not easily corruptable.
› Much more sensitive and can pick up weak signals.
› Able to charge and run at the same time, unlike the BCD436HP.
› Customizable color screen is easier to read than the black & white BCD436HP.
› The stock antenna is just OK. Uniden degraded the antenna to get certified waterproof. This on set antenna increases range up to 100%.
› Battery issue: There was a battery issue when first launched which has been fixed, this issue will not affect any orders placed after November 2018.
› If knob (multi function scroll) is not functioning properly, pull the knob off and reattach.
› New battery tends to get hot—doesn't always last 8 hours as Uniden suggests.

Programming

The new Uniden SDS100 comes with Sentinel software like other Uniden scanners including 436, 536 & HP2. While there is a version of Sentinel Software for each scanner, they operate the same. The SDS100 includes Sentinel Software (download free SDS100 software here). Watch our Uniden Sentinel software programming video here or above in video gallery.

Police Scanner Programming FAQ

What is 'One Touch Start Up'?

Adding this with programming allows our technicians to make hardware, software & frequency updates prior to shipping your scanner. You can buy only the programming which will give you everything needed to listen in your area but 'one touch start up' ensures a smooth experience right from the start with zero technical know-how. 'One touch start up' is popular with gifts as this allows the scanner to simply 'work' by powering on.

How long does this take?

Programming adds 1-2 additional business days to delivery.

What if this does not work?

We have a 100% money back guarantee if you’re not happy with your programming.

How are you so much cheaper than other scanner programming places?

We’re awesome.

Can you program X, Y, Z?

We can program anything that is in Radio Reference. If you have frequencies that are not in Radio Reference, as long as you can put them in a CSV file, we can program them.

What if I need help?

We’re always here to help.

Can I programming this scanner myself?

We created a programming decision tree as well as programming videos (above) to help you decided on whether you should include professional programming with your scanner but we HIGHLY recommend adding programming.

Can't I just punch in my zip code for programming?

When you type in your zip code, it scans EVERYTHING in your area, which is kinda like getting the phone book thrown at you. This is why over 95% of orders include programming & why we highly recommend. Our professional programming filters the junk out so you don't have to listen to things such as the dog catcher, repo guy, power company & such.

How long does programming take?

It takes our scanner tech over an hour to program each scanner & this is ALL he does. For new & moderate scanner users we estimate 3-12 hours of programming. Setup time varies wildly based on scanner, area as well as scanner & general tech familiarity.

Why should I buy programming?

Programming is the #1 reason police scanners are returned. While scanner programming is much easier than the days of crystal scanners, there is a learning curve like any other electronics purchase. While some scanner enthusiasts are highly technical and want to learn the ins and outs of programming, others want their scanner to just ‘work’ right out of the box. 95% of all scanner sales include programming, so unless you’re familiar with scanners, scanner terminology, own a PC (Mac’s do not work), and want to learn the nuances of programming, we highly recommend having your scanner professionally programmed. Scanner technology is fairly user friendly, but scanners are not smartphones or iPads. If you're spending hundreds on a scanner; we recommend springing a few extra bucks so it works right out of the box.

Can't you teach me programming with your lifetime technical support?

No. Lifetime technical support is not unlimited technical support. We are always here to help, love to do so. We made how to videos and can help point you in the right direction, but we will not teach programming.

SDS100 Scanner solid product Review by Mike
Review Rating
This Scanner is amazing. User friendly but I'm still learning a lot to learn. Order the spare battery/charger combo with it. The charger that came with the spare battery charges the battery in 6-6.5 hours. The charging cord that came with the scanner takes 12-14 hours to charge. Like most Scanners the batteries don't last that long 4-5 hours and when it completely dies can't listen to it while charging. Batt/Charger combo is hands down the best accessory I bought for it. Simply the only scanner choice for P25 LSM SimulcastReview by Inigo
Review Rating
First the bad:
- Large LiPo battery pack only lasts about half a day, then takes all night to charge (gone are the days of AA batteries)
- Scanner gets noticeably warm when on
- Keypad is cheap and button pushes frequently don't register
- Speaker is too small for the scanner - works fine for regular use but too quiet for the car
- Digital AGC seems to hunt for the right volume, the same talkgroup on a trunking system bounce around between different volumes between each transmission
- "Pay to win" firmware upgrades for DMR and NXDN when I think these features should be standard on new scanners (at least they are offered however, and I will begrudgingly upgrade mine soon)

Now the good (why did I still give this 5 stars?):

They aren't kidding with their "True I/Q Scanner" slogan. With so many parts of the US transitioning not just to P25 digital trunking but also P25 simulcast ("Linear Simulcast Modulation" aka CQPSK for P25 Phase I and H-DQPSK for P25 Phase II) traditional P25-capable digital scanners have been going quiet. My reception on a new P25 phase I simulcast system got 100% better upgrading to the SDS100, and went from sporadic reception of a few syllables here and there to continuous crystal clear audio. The difference is truly night and day.

If you have a P25 simulcast trunking system in your area and are struggling with reception on an older digital scanner, the SDS100/200 is the scanner for you. If you don't then this scanner is probably overkill, but there's no guarantee your area won't be going P25 simulcast in the future. But until the competition catches up and offers a P25 simulcast-capable scanner, the SDS100/200 is the only game and town (along with the Unication which is a pager) and all of my gripes in "the bad" category pale in comparison to the night and day improvement in reception on my local P25 simulcast system.

Finally, I wanted to offer a huge shoutout to the Zipscanners team Luke, Garrett, Keanan, Reelika and Joseph (and Simon lol). I was a first time customer and specifically picked you guys because you were a small business and were offering the most transparent and open communication about the state of the SDS100 backorder situation. You guys kept us all in the loop with several email updates during the month-long backorder and my scanner shipped right around when you said to expect when I first placed my order. Nevermind the fact that this was all during a global pandemic and then the civil unrest that unfolded in Minneapolis where your company is based.

Long story short, I was very impressed buying from Zipscanners and very pleased with my purchase. I will happily recommend Zipscanners and be a return customer in the future. Thanks again you guys! (Posted on 6/26/2020)
SDS-100 + Zip Scanners - A real winnerReview by RVACS

Thanks Zip Scanners for your flawless service and assistance on my new SDS-100.

The Scanner is wonderful for Simulcast P25 Phase 1 or 2 systems. This works so much better than the 436 or 536 scanners. Feels very sturdy. Lots of functionality and easy to setup with Sentinel software. Its a real winner and a must have along with an SDS-200.

It took a day to figure it out, and most of that is the sentinel software to program it.
I built a couple of favorites, and now it works very well. Found out a couple of blips in it.
When programming some of the frequencies exactly as they were in the database, but I found out if it were to program a police frequency as Law talk it wouldn't always pick it up, and scan by it. While my old scanner would pick it every time. I knew this was listed on the network as Law Dispatch. Picks it up every time now. Something to look for. Someone mentioned it on Radioreference. I have enjoyed my SDS 100 Scanner. Zipscanners.com has provided excellent service all around. I only have one small con for this scanner and that is that the scanner does not have good quality on the Aviation bands. I am going to order a different antenna to see if that may help improve the reception. (Posted on 2/4/2020)

As a scanner owner (multiple brands and functionality scanners) the SDS100 is an outstanding hand held scanner. Get the programming to get you started, then learn how to add additional stations to listen to and it will be a valuable asset to your scanning enjoyment. Zip Scanners is the place to get this with their support you can't go wrong. (Posted on 11/27/2019)

I am excited with my new SDS100. After review I probably could have programmed it myself but the fee I paid for you to do it to get me started was well worth it. The last scanner I used (and still use for some things) is probably 30 years old. I am sure as I continue to play and get familiar with my new scanner I will probably be taking advantage of your tech support but for now I am very happy. (Posted on 5/14/2019)
