How is the HomePatrol-2 different than the HomePatrol-1?
The big difference is the HomePatrol-2 (HP2) can pick up digital phase 2 digital signals & the HomePatrol-2 (HP1) cannot. So the HP1, like all digital phase 1 scanners, is being phased out and we highly recommend buying the HP2.

I need a phase 2 digital scanner, why should I buy the HP2?

It can be used in your home or vehicle - or both. It's the only phase 2 digital scanner with a color touchscreen which smart phone and iPad users are use to.

Will the HomePatrol-2 go on sale anytime soon?
We don't know. Uniden does not disclose when they will be dropping prices and even when prices do drop, it is usually only $5 to $10. You can sign up for our emails & we'll keep you posted. Also, we have a best price guarantee.

What's the catch - this police scanner seems too good to be true?
No catch—this is just a solid scanner.

What's the difference between refurbished and new HomePatrol-2's?
Besides the cost, they are the exact same with one notable difference; some refurbished HP2 power light does not turn green when fully charged. They charge and operate exactly the same, but the light does not turn green. We will not replace any refurbished HP2s for this light issue. This is not an issue on new HP2s and only on some refurbished units. Some users are frustrated by this light issue, others could care less.

Additional Memory?

You can add a larger memory (SD card) to increase favorites lists and recording space. Recording time by SD card size:

› 2 GB = 6 hours
› 4 GB = 12 hours
› 8 GB = 24 hours
› 16 GB = 50 hours
› 32 GB = 100 hours
› 64 GB = 200 hours

Can I charge the batteries from the scanner when it is on?

No. You must power off the scanner to charge. We recommend an external battery charger and 2 sets of rechargeable AA batteries; all of which can be added on this page. This way you can always have a fresh set up batteries. The batteries we sell last about 8 hours on single charge; Energizer/Duracell last about 5 hours.

Buyers Say

› Does not have WiFi or Bluetooth capabilities.
› 4 GB memory card (436 & 536 have 4 GB) but the 4GB is more than enough.
› An AC adapter is not included.
› No built in GPS (must buy GPS device).
› You can add frequencies manually.

› Mark's Scanners is an excellent website which has a very detailed digital owner's guides for all police scanner radios including the HomePatrol-2. We highly recommend this page to all HomePatrol-2 owners (and potential owners) as it loaded with how-to's, screenshots and more.

Download Home Patrol-2 Sentinel Software. Download the software that drives this scanner for free. Set up favorite lists, configure for your area & see if you're comfortable operating before you buy. If you buy, you'll have everything set up & ready to go.

Home Patrol-2 Owner's Manual. This is the official Home Patrol-2 owner's manual but we highly recommend Mark's Scanners Home Patrol-2 guide over this.

› Radio Reference is the largest police scanner radio forum with over 850k users. There are several threads about the HomePatrol-2 where just about every question imaginable has been asked and answered by HomePatrol-2 owners.

› Uniden has a forum which, while not as active as Radio Reference, is a great place to ask and answer HomePatrol-2 questions.

› There are Yahoo Groups for every police scanner radio including the HomePatrol-2.

› Uniden created a one page 'sell sheet' for the HomePatrol-2.

› eHam is a great source for unfiltered user reviews of the HomePatrol-2. While not as in-depth as professional reviews, you can get a good general idea of what users think about the HomePatrol-2.

› Monitoring Reviews has a 15 minute video review of the HomePatrol-2.

Police Scanner Programming FAQ

What is 'One Touch Start Up'?

Adding this with programming allows our technicians to make hardware, software & frequency updates prior to shipping your scanner. You can buy only the programming which will give you everything needed to listen in your area but 'one touch start up' ensures a smooth experience right from the start with zero technical know-how. 'One touch start up' is popular with gifts as this allows the scanner to simply 'work' by powering on.

How long does this take?

Programming adds 1-2 additional business days to delivery.

What if this does not work?

We have a 100% money back guarantee if you’re not happy with your programming.

How are you so much cheaper than other scanner programming places?

We’re awesome.

Can you program X, Y, Z?

We can program anything that is in Radio Reference. If you have frequencies that are not in Radio Reference, as long as you can put them in a CSV file, we can program them.

What if I need help?

We’re always here to help.

Can I Program On My Own?

We created a programming decision tree as well as programming videos (above) to help you decided on whether you should include professional programming with your scanner but we HIGHLY recommend adding programming.

Can't I just punch in my zip code for programming?

When you type in your zip code, it scans EVERYTHING in your area, which is kinda like getting the phone book thrown at you. This is why over 95% of orders include programming & why we highly recommend. Our professional programming filters the junk out so you don't have to listen to things such as the dog catcher, repo guy, power company & such.

How long does programming take?

It takes our scanner tech over an hour to program each scanner & this is ALL he does. For new & moderate scanner users we estimate 3-12 hours of programming. Setup time varies wildly based on scanner, area as well as scanner & general tech familiarity.

Why should I buy programming?

Programming is the #1 reason police scanners are returned. While scanner programming is much easier than the days of crystal scanners, there is a learning curve like any other electronics purchase. While some scanner enthusiasts are highly technical and want to learn the ins and outs of programming, others want their scanner to just ‘work’ right out of the box. 95% of all scanner sales include programming, so unless you’re familiar with scanners, scanner terminology, own a PC (Mac’s do not work), and want to learn the nuances of programming, we highly recommend having your scanner professionally programmed. Scanner technology is fairly user friendly, but scanners are not smartphones or iPads. If you're spending hundreds on a scanner; we recommend springing a few extra bucks so it works right out of the box.

Can't you teach me programming with your lifetime technical support?

No. Lifetime technical support is not unlimited technical support. We are always here to help, love to do so. We made how to videos and can help point you in the right direction, but we will not teach programming.

First off it works very well on P25 Phase 2 as well as other Motorola systems. It is a just slightly more deaf the my 436 but that might be a good thing with simulcast. FOR THOSE complaining about not being able to put in custom frequencies there is software out there that will let you do it and the software works very well. Google it.. Overall a solid scanner I rated it at a 4 because of not being able to custom program out of the box (Posted on 12/13/2018)

Yes the radio may be $439 but to unlock the upgrade features pushes it over $500 clams. It may program itself and THAT is the problem for me. I cannot add channels not found in the database THEY maintain OR do the Entire county in fewer that 200 steps -- convoluted piece of $#!7 -- I would sell it for $200 to some sucker but I am not that type of person. Had a homepatrol 1 nothing wrong with it. When the homepatrol 2 came out my advice to all scanner owners, Buy this! I am getting Twice what I was hearing on HP 1 . Had it up and running in no time. Pulled in Wilmington Ohio, 54 miles away. Thanks To Uniden I will recommend this to anyone.Money Well Spent. (Posted on 8/3/2016)

Sold 3 other scanners I had to get this and it was a good decision, I knew how to program them but it was a hassle, this is a joy to use and I got the GPS option and it works flawlessly on the road (be aware though that some states restrict use) I'm a ham radio operator and in comes in handy on the road.

Some people like small and compactReview by Ben

Very compact. Probably needs an external speaker. Surely they could have made this unit into a larger box. Some people like small and compact. Give me a choice I choose slightly larger. Too many channels scanning at one time. I like to lock in one just one or two channels. With all the negatives I still like it, until something better comes along.

Really Great Scanner. Well worth the money.Review by Vic

This is a really great scanner. Favorites lists are easy to create. I still haven't figured out how to program Custom Service types. I hope this is not a part of the Upgrade feature. If any knows let me know. The receiver is extremely sensitive. I find using the Attenuate feature helps a lot in the Los Angeles Area. The record feature works great. Even though the scanner has a complete database in it. I still refer back to Radio Reference to help choose the correct group of frequencies for any service desired when creating favorite lists. I have not purchased the Upgrade feature. For now I do not need it. It was definitely a huge upgrade from my last scanner.

This scanner is a major leap forwardReview by Luke
Review Rating
I've had scanners for at least the last 25 years going back to my first Radio Shack programmable scanner, the PRO-2003. They've come a long way since then. But this scanner is a major leap forward.

As available channels have increased (over 1000 available in just my corner of Los Angeles), scanners needed to change. It was getting too cumbersome with the 10 and 20-year old designs to manage frequencies. But this scanner fixes that problem. It's amazingly easy to use, and the included software is light years better than other stuff out there.

Not to mention, the build quality is amazing, the audio and receive quality is fantastic, and the digital features like recording bring this hardware into the present era.

No hesitation about this purchase. It's worth the money. Uniden has hit a winner. (Posted on 9/1/2015)
Easiest Scanner Setup I've Ever SeenReview by Keith
Review Rating
Time from "Box on the porch" to listening to the statewide trunk system was about 2 minutes.

The scanner is well built, reasonably sensitive, easy to use, and well thought out and designed. As others have stated, the included rubber duck antenna is crap. I immediately took it off, used the included BNC adapter, added a right-angle BNC adapter, and a 19" whip I had nearby, and reception on all bands was improved. I need to get my discone antenna back on the roof, but that's another story...

Beware, the charging circuit appears to be time based, not voltage based. If true, you can easily overcharge and destroy the batteries.

Note to Uniden: Please add Mac and/or Linux support! OTOH, iOS and/or Android support would be cool. Not all of us are willing to use Windows. (Posted on 9/1/2015)

Well worth the investmentReview by Warren
Review Rating
The HomePatrol-2 scanner is well worth the investment. The build quality is solid, and the audio crisp and clear. There are several options for customizing your listening experience by specific county, specific service, such as police, fire, or public works, by zip code, or even an option to set a specific radius (in miles) from your current location. There are numerious menus and screens to navigate through, and it takes a while to familiarize yourself with all of the many options this scanner has to offer. Curiously, there is an "auto-detect" feature which can be used to detect your current location. This would seem to indicate that the unit has built in GPS, but I don't believe it does. I tried using the "auto-detect" feature, and it indicated that I was in a location nearly 200 miles away. There is the ability to save specific channels to a custom bank, as well as the ability to manually enter specific frequencies. You can also "hold" on a specific channel if so desired. When you first activate the scanner, it gives you the option to download the software onto a P.C. but my unit would not complete the process. I will be contacting Uniden for guidance on this. You will also need to update the software version to 2.0, even though the scanner is brand new.

Meets all of my expectations. The audio is very clear and and picks up signals in my area very well with just the small attached antenna. 2 of the 4 Chinese batteries included had low voltage issues after charging so I tossed them and bought 2 sets of the Duracell rechargeable batteries. I have been listening to scanners since the days they needed plug-in crystals for every frequency, and I still have many older high end analog scanners. This thing is excellent, it demonstrates how far the technology has come and I highly recommend it. It is the easiest scanner to use and be sure you are hearing all the local action, and it performs really well.

A Great ScannerReview by Frank
Review Rating
This scanner is great. Very easy user interface with colored touch screen. It literally took me less than 5min to set it up and start listening. I'm new to scanners and this is the 4th one I've tried. The previous ones were all too complicated to setup & get working and even once I did get them set up, I couldn't pick-up the channels I wanted because the scanner didn't support it. The HomePatrol 2 picks up EVERYTHING. The antenna could be better but depending on where you are at you can get a wide variety of channels. I think this is 1 of the best scanners out there right now unless you're a pro and like to have full control over your scanner and do a manual setup. I prefer to let the technology do the work for me. Ha!

but this by far is the best. I have it a few weeks nowReview by Hank
Review Rating
I have had many scanners over the years, but this by far is the best. I have it a few weeks now. You get what you pay for. It took a little while (very little) to get used to how it works, but it is really good. Just using the antenna that comes with it I do get a good deal of contacts further then I expected.
If you want a good scanner mainly for local info, you can't go wrong. As a bonus, you will get info out of your general area.
If you use regular batteries, expect about 5 3/4 hours before the screen comes up saying that the batteries are low. (Posted on 9/1/2015)
