How is the BCD536HP different than the BCD436HP?
The BCD536HP and the BCD436HP were both released in the fall of 2013 and the main difference between them is that the BCD436HP is handheld and the BCD536HP is for home/base and vehicles.

I need a phase 2 digital scanner, why should I buy the BCD536HP?
The BCD536HP is a solid mobile and base scanner which was, until the launch of the Whistler TRX-2 in the summer of 2016, our top selling base/mobile police scanner.

Will the BCD536HP go on sale anytime soon?
We don't know. Uniden does not disclose when they will be dropping prices and even when prices do drop, it is usually only $5 to $10. You can sign up for our emails & we'll keep you posted. Also, we have a best price guarantee.

I'm reading reviews and see there are issues with the BCD536HP - what's the deal?

When the BCD536HP and BCD436HP launched in the fall of 2013 there were some issues with the scanners and several needed to be replaced. Uniden has since modified the BCD536HP and the larger issues have been addressed. All Uniden scanners come with a 1-year warranty and Uniden stood behind this and made good with affected scanners. If you see a negative review or comment about the BCD536HP is was most likely posted before the spring of 2014 so be sure to view when it was posted.

What's ProVoice and do I need it?
ProVoice is form of digital broadcast that affect some EDACS signals. These can only be monitored on the BCD436HP and the BCD536HP scanners with the addition of the ProVoice upgrade. Zip Scanners can make this upgrade for you by choosing this add on option or you an update on your own after purchase here. Below is a map of affected areas and here is the most up to date list.

Additional Memory?

You can add a larger memory (SD card) to increase favorites lists and recording space. Recording time by SD card size:

› 2 GB = 6 hours
› 4 GB = 12 hours
› 8 GB = 24 hours
› 16 GB = 50 hours
› 32 GB = 100 hours
› 64 GB = 200 hours

Can I charge the batteries from the scanner when it is on?

No. You must power off the scanner to charge. We recommend an external battery charger and 2 sets of rechargeable AA batteries; all of which can be added on this page. This way you can always have a fresh set of batteries. The batteries we sell last about 8 hours on single charge; Energizer/Duracell last about 5 hours.

Police Scanner Programming FAQ

What is 'One Touch Start Up'?

Adding this with programming allows our technicians to make hardware, software & frequency updates prior to shipping your scanner. You can buy only the programming which will give you everything needed to listen in your area but 'one touch start up' ensures a smooth experience right from the start with zero technical know-how. 'One touch start up' is popular with gifts as this allows the scanner to simply 'work' by powering on.

How long does this take?

Programming adds 1-2 additional business days to delivery.

What if this does not work?

We have a 100% money back guarantee if you’re not happy with your programming.

How are you so much cheaper than other scanner programming places?

We’re awesome.

Can you program X, Y, Z?

We can program anything that is in Radio Reference. If you have frequencies that are not in Radio Reference, as long as you can put them in a CSV file, we can program them.

What if I need help?

We’re always here to help.

Can I programming this scanner myself?

We created a programming decision tree as well as programming videos (above) to help you decided on whether you should include professional programming with your scanner but we HIGHLY recommend adding programming.

Can't I just punch in my zip code for programming?

When you type in your zip code, it scans EVERYTHING in your area, which is kinda like getting the phone book thrown at you. This is why over 95% of orders include programming & why we highly recommend. Our professional programming filters the junk out so you don't have to listen to things such as the dog catcher, repo guy, power company & such.

How long does programming take?

It takes our scanner tech over an hour to program each scanner & this is ALL he does. For new & moderate scanner users we estimate 3-12 hours of programming. Setup time varies wildly based on scanner, area as well as scanner & general tech familiarity.

Why should I buy programming?

Programming is the #1 reason police scanners are returned. While scanner programming is much easier than the days of crystal scanners, there is a learning curve like any other electronics purchase. While some scanner enthusiasts are highly technical and want to learn the ins and outs of programming, others want their scanner to just ‘work’ right out of the box. 95% of all scanner sales include programming, so unless you’re familiar with scanners, scanner terminology, own a PC (Mac’s do not work), and want to learn the nuances of programming, we highly recommend having your scanner professionally programmed. Scanner technology is fairly user friendly, but scanners are not smartphones or iPads. If you're spending hundreds on a scanner; we recommend springing a few extra bucks so it works right out of the box.

Can't you teach me programming with your lifetime technical support?

No. Lifetime technical support is not unlimited technical support. We are always here to help, love to do so. We made how to videos and can help point you in the right direction, but we will not teach programming.

I started to buy a different scanner...but the excellent help (not sale'see)...the information and the chats - changed my mind. Now that I have the radio, they were right. I'm very happy with the entire process. They help me understand each scanner, and the new features I was unaware of.....they didn't sell me on a scanner, just provided information and some direction....I appreciated this most. After some research, I ordered, and everything worked perfectly...Even as experienced scanner, get the expert programming -- Its worth it.

If you by a scanner from some place did it wrong. I'm so glad I found ZipScanners and I will be back soon to order more. Get your radio from here! (Posted on 11/6/2017)

The BCD536HP is a great, easy to use scanner once you get the feel for it. There is a slight learning curve for us ol timers from the crystal radio days. The learning curve is a little more of a headache for new hobbiest. Either way, I think this is one of the finest scanners ever made and should be around for years as long as firmware/software keep making it shine. Thank you Zip ascanners for helping with this pleasant experience.... (Posted on 2/15/2017)

Very happy with this BCD536HP scanner. Easy to use. Unbox it, put in your zip code and you are ready to go. I could not believe the reception I was getting just using the included telescopic antenna with the scanner located in my basement! It pulled in stations 20-30 miles away without problem. I eventually put up an inexpensive discone antenna in my attic and the performance is absolutely astonishing. I am using the WiFi feature so I can listen on my iphone/ipad. This is a great feature and the main reason why I bought this scanner as opposed to any other. Overall, I am very happy with this. (Posted on 8/2/2016)

BCD536HP - A great scanner!Review by Otis
Review Rating
This is a great scanner, easily the best I've ever owned, and I have owned quite a few dating all the way back to the 1970's. That being said, I will also say it's easily the most maligned piece of electronic equipment I've ever heard of, and that reputation is not entirely unwarranted. This scanner debuted in early 2014 with early adopters finding a number of problems, including defective headphone jacks, and problems with SD cards becoming corrupted. Uniden made good on the headphone jack issue and repaired or replaced the affected units that were returned. The SD card issue seems to be hit or miss, but many who have had the problem have reported that replacing the SD card that came with the scanner with a new one has helped or eliminated the problem entirely. More recently some users have reported that the LCD backlight has dimmed over time. This is worrying, and I find myself trying to use the radio with the backlight either off, or set to its dimmest setting in order to preserve the life of the backlight. Again, this may be an issue that affects some units and not others, but I don’t want to find out the hard way. Another worrying issue is the clock battery. Some have reported their clock battery going dead after a period of months and have been unable to recharge it, or get it to hold a charge. If the clock battery is dead, the radio will require you to enter the date and time each time you turn it on, so while this doesn’t kill the radio it will suck some of the fun out of it. And then of course it took Uniden a year to finally release the Siren app for iPhone, something that was touted as a major new feature when the radio was released.
OK, so all that stuff sounds bad, and it is, but I still think this is a great radio. The Siren app is out now and mostly works, at least within your home WIFI network. The headphone jack on my radio is fine. I’ve re-programmed the radio multiple times and had no card failures (I’m using a 32GB card I bought new, keeping the supplied card as a backup.) My clock works fine. The Uniden Sentinel software that comes free is bare-bones but usable. It updates the radio’s firmware easily. The radio scans quickly, it’s UHF and VHF sensitivity is better than I expected it would be based on user comments I’d read. The radio looks and sounds great! It does not look like the “Pinto” of police scanners, which let’s face it, it kind of is. it looks more like a BMW. Very nice fit and finish, very nice design. The feel to the controls is nice & solid, and the very nice display offers more characters to use for your Alpha Tags than ever before. It’s really a wonderful, even refined, radio. I would easily give it 5 stars if it weren’t for all the design and quality control issues that have plagued it, at least did in the past.
Now I will say I think a lot of folks will be disappointed in the “Home Patrol” aspect of this radio. Yes it’s touted as a major feature, and yes you can enter your Zip Code and be scanning your local police and fire in minutes. But what I’ve found is it tends to load up a lot of stuff you will not enjoy listening to, which forces the scanner to work its way through a lot of unnecessary channels, slowing the scan cycle way down. Yes, you can hit “Avoid” on stuff, and yes you can select only the types of communications you’re interested in. All that will help, but scanners work best when you PROGRAM THEM. When YOU put in exactly what YOU want to listen to. So my advice is to take the time to learn how to program the radio properly with Sentinel, or with the Butel software (a subscription at radio reference will help if you use Butel). You will enjoy your radio infinitley more when its set up properly. If this is your first scanner, and you live in an area with complex communications systems, you should expect that learning how to program it is going to take some time and effort. It will be time well spent though, and there’s lots of resources online to help. The Marks Easier To Read manual online is a good place to start. Also is a huge compendium of help and information and informative users. (Posted on 9/1/2015)
5Excellent unit for the price.Review by Wade
Review Rating
Right out of the box you can start listening to police or fire calls using the programmed frequencies before you have to start worrying about inputting your own. The instruction manual wasn't as clear as I was hoping for but as others have said, once you figure out how to program it for your own channels it's fairly easy. I am using this unit to replace a Bearcat 210 five band scanner base unit - this was from 1979. I also have a Uniden DC700A in my truck and a hand held Uniden Trunk Tracker that gets the 800 bands. Another winner for Uniden, simple, no problems.

Amazing scanner. The most advanced scanner with the mostReview by Chris
Review Rating
Amazing scanner. The most advanced scanner with the most options I have ever had. Currently I have 5 scanners and 4 of them are Uniden. The most important thing to determine before you buy this scanner is if the police, sheriff and fire departments in your community transmit an encrypted signal. This scanner or any scanner will not work for you if the signal is encrypted. In Georgia, Clayton, Henry, Fayette and Spalding Counties encrypt their signals. I live in Clayton county and the other counties I listed surround me. I am returning it. It is a heart breaker for me and my wife. We have been listening to police scanners for 20 years and now nothing will work. I guess it is more important for the police department, sheriffs department and fire departments to keep everything from the public than it is for the public to know what is happening in their community. This is a sad day for government transparency. I guess the local politicians think it is better if you do not know what is happening in your community.

Not that hard to program manually!!Review by Brett
Review Rating
First of all I've only owned one scanner in my life and it was the old style non-trunking Type scanner.. Also like other reviewers have said I would be playing it safe and if you plan to order this make sure you order it from directly that way you know you will definitely get the model you paid for BCT 15 X.. There is a difference between the BCT 15 and the BCT 15 X!! And it's funny that the BCT 15 X is cheaper then the other model.. Okay on with the scanner absolutely love this thing.. I had no idea on how to do trunking or what it was or how to program it nothing!! I did my research.. If you go to YouTube and type in Uniden BCT 15 X there is a handful of videos that show you how to program this manually enough to get you started with basic trunking. I live in Portland Oregon where here we use Motorola type II trunking Systems. I watch the videos off and on for about a week and did my research for the Frequencies and talk group IDs in my area in Portland. And just watch the videos on YouTube also the bcd996xt scanner Programs basically exactly the same way as the BCT 15 X .. I learned that from the videos to. Finally I went ahead and ordered it When I got it the first thing I had to do was go into the system make my System for what I was going to scan in Oregon. Again just watch the videos for a few times off and on and it's not hard at all! Apparently most places now in bigger cities use 800 MHz trunking. So I had to re-band the scanner for 800 MHz. Keep in mind I have no computer to hook this thing up to For doing software updates or programming it. The re-banding took me literally maybe a minute and a half. Again YouTube video shows you exactly how to do it. Then I typed in my 4 control channel frequencies. Then I typed in a few talk group IDs that I want to try out first to listen to. And hit the scan button.. and there you have it I was receiving my Portland trucking system Departments.. it works great and it wasn't hard to do.. As for the sound quality of this thing is absolutely unbelievably clear. It comes of all the accessories and wires and cables to use it in your car. or use it as a home base unit which is what I'm doing with it.. I've read some of the reviews here and Some people say that they weren't sure on how the sound quality would be if you used it as a base unit because yes the speaker is on the bottom of the unit!! But they Forget to mention that it comes with a bracket that is used for mounting in your car or truck and it just so happens that same bracket works for your base unit sitting on your table. It props up the unit at an angle that is adjustable. It works great on any surface I keep mine on my nightstand next to my bed. And I can angle the unit how I wish. Sound quality?? you can't even tell the speaker is on the bottom!! And the unit looks good to.. One of the best toys I've ever bought for $180.00 I like the fact that you can put names pretty much for everything. In the system. Name it how you want to name it whether it be the system name the scanner frequency name what you're listening to it's very easy to use the Alpha tag naming on this!! It does take a little while to get used to how everything works like pressing the buttons and where everything is at. If you go online there's a very cool free user manual that you can download in PDF format or just look it up on the Internet and bookmark it. Type in easier to read BCT 15 X user manual. The way that the manual is laid out is very cool because when it talks about something you can hit the highlighted area and it takes you right to that section on the how-to and back again to where you left off reading. Because this thing does not come with pretty much any type of user manual. Like I said I've owned one scanner in my life and it was the old-style and I was up and listening to this scanner in about less than 15 minutes!! YouTube YouTube YouTube that's all you have to do!! And you can get the frequencies for your area and the talk group IDs off the Internet I went to radio This is Definitely the best scanner out there that I can imagine on the market!! Don't be intimidated by the scanner and the people saying that it's a nightmare to manually program..those people chances are they didn't do any type of research or even bother to try and find online How to videos YouTube!!!!! Anyways great scanner easy to MANUALLY!! Program If you just take some time while you're waiting for it to show up on your doorstep to Watch some videos and do some research About what's used in your area. You'll absolutely love this thing once you get used to working it.. All this from somebody who has only owned one Low end old-style scanner in his lifetime Short life I'm only 36.. Just make sure you buy it from Amazon only!!! That way you know you're getting what you paid for!! UPDATE DAME THIS THING IS AMAZING!!!! It really upsets me that people I'm not going to mention names just scroll to the bottom of the screen towards the last one star review. Complaining That it can't pick up anything even if you're sitting in front of the station. Well newsflash it's Not going to pick up anything even if you're inside the freaking police station If you don't have it Programmed right!!!! This is only my First high-end trunking scanner. And like I said earlier I don't even own a computer to Program this thing I did all manually.. Anyway I can't believe how great this scanner is. Law-enforcement I get to hear every thing and then some! I hear Stakeouts .swat team. Police pursuits.. Undercover operations.. A lot of stuff that's pretty crazy. And in my town . listening to the scanner is almost more entertaining than Watching my TV!!! I've owned this scanner now for about a month. And I feel like A pro scanner enthusiast.. You simply have to buy this Scanner!!! There is a little bit of a learning curve.. But if you're willing to Just take the time To do a little research.. Believe me you will be rewarded greatly For your efforts.. I am just sorry that I waited so long to pull the trigger on buying This scanner (Posted on 9/1/2015)

This is a great scanner, should be the last i'll ever need to buy. I was leary of this at first having read reviews of how difficult it was to program and setup. But decided to give it a try, could always send it back. Which i was ready to do after the first full day. But, knowing this was not going to be a slam dunk setup I decided to stick with it and with the help of FreeScan, ProScan and i am sitting here at my workstation listening to all the trunk traffic of Delaware county OH. Only took 4 days. That is not a bad learning curve for a hobby that is going to give me a lot of enjoyment for years to come. It is probably the most advanced scanner of its type and I have a long way to go as far as learning all the features. So my advice is to buy it if you want to get into this field and don't expect a plug and play experience, don't give up easily either. I guess my next think is an outdoor antenna to increase the range.
